Betfred are one of the most recognisable betting companies in the world and started out as a single shop in Salford in the 1960s. They expanded their retail empire and still retain a strong high street presence although much of their money now comes from the Gibraltar-based online operation that encompasses sports betting as well as casino, games, bingo and poker products, among others.

Betfred owner Fred Done likes to call himself the Bonus King and no matter what sport you want to bet on – and there are plenty to choose from at Betfred – you are sure to find a special offer or bonus to help you on your way.

Betfred tends to innovate in terms of new markets (they invented Lucky 15s and Goals Galore) and their bonuses are innovative too, with Double Delight, Hat-trick Heaven offering double and treble odds on first scorer football bets if they net two or three and similar offers for American football and rugby. There are loads of enhanced odds football bets, best odds guaranteed on UK and Irish races and regular offers on the dogs and football, including a 1-1 correct score refund promotion.

With years of industry experience, great offers including a free bet for signing up and an easy to use site, either online or via mobile devices, Betfred is hard to beat.

Ladbrokes is another of the UK giants and with thousands of high street betting shops they are an instantly recognisable brand. Their roots go way back to the 19th century, although they really only came into being in the form we now know when betting shops were legalised in the UK in the 1960s. A huge company with a great reputation, an excellent site and tons of experience, Ladbrokes has a lot to offer.

Due to their size and long history Ladbrokes is as good as anyone when it comes to the range of sports and markets they offer and with a nicely designed site, online or via mobile devices, finding your bets is easy.

They are also up in the top group when it comes to offers, including a very tasty sign up freebie as well as ongoing promotions for existing customers. Offers include loads of price boosts on big events of the day, accumulator bonuses, their RED-emption promo offering money back on certain footy bets if there is a red card and loads of racing goodies, although the value of the offers can be a little lower than at some of the very best bookies.

All in all Ladbrokes are very strong, with no major flaws and just a few tweaks needed to see them amongst the very, very top bookmakers going. Definitely well worth checking out though!

Totesport Sports - £25 Matched Bet

Totesport’s origins go way back to the 1920s when Winston Churchill created the Racehorse Betting Control Board, the forerunner to the Horserace Totalisator Board which was known as the Tote. It was government owned until as recently as 2011 when Betfred bought the company and whilst Tote is no longer present on the high street, the website is going stronger than ever backed by the industry knowhow and private sector smarts of Fred.

Synonymous with horseracing, Tote remains the number one place for Totepool betting and with the big rollovers offering lottery-esque jackpots it’s no wonder. Tote is an excellent all rounder when it comes to horse racing with great coverage, interactive cards and solid odds and is also strong on football but not quite as good in other areas.

They now offer some of the same free bets and promotions as Betfred, including Double Delight and Hat-trick Heaven but overall their regular offers are not quite as good as at the parent company, being fewer in frequency. The exception to this, however, is their racing offers which are some of the best around - including 5x the odds for one winner in a Lucky 63.

With a solid welcome free bet and more bonuses and offers being added as Betfred’s influence really begins to show, Totesport is well worth adding to your betting portfolio.

10bet may not be a name that is familiar to every sports betting fan, but they have actually been around since 2003. They started life with something of an Asian focus but increased sponsorship around Premier League games was a sign they were looking to become more competitive in the UK market and that is now where much of their efforts are focussed.

They are, unlike many rivals, licensed and regulated in the UK by the UK Gambling Commission and that, along with their excellent online security measures, offers good reassurance that 10bet are a safe, fair and trustworthy place to bet on sports. 10bet continue to grow steadily and with customers in around 100 countries it is clear they are getting things right.

As with many UK betting sites 10bet have excellent coverage when it comes to football, with major leagues and more obscure competitions all featuring heavily with a wide range of markets both pre-match and in-play via their dedicated live betting tab, a relatively new feature. That said, you will also find “lesser” sports, such as futsal, MMA and surfing, albeit with a smaller range of bets available.

Odds aren't exceptional, although you may occasionally find standout odds on some of the less popular events and in general they are never too far off the mark. Their fairly frequent reload bonuses also a nice touch for those of us who like a good freebie.

Vernons’ history goes back to 1925 when the company launched as a provider of the football pools, a prediction game with lottery-style prizes and odds that involves forecasting score-draws from a list of matches. In 2007 Vernons was acquired by Sportech, along with the other major football pools providers, and then sold again in 2013 to Netplay plc.

Netplay is a reputable and secure company that operates a variety of gaming sites, primarily via TV channels. Netplay will bring a fresh approach to Vernons but given the site already boasted around 400,000 registered users they were clearly doing many things right already.

Licensed and regulated in the Channel Islands by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, Vernons use software and security that is verified as safe by Thawte, the leading independent trust mark.

The website itself is excellent, with loads of information and markets are instantly visible on the home page whilst the colour scheme that is easy on the eye. With odds that are slightly above average, a decent live betting offering and excellent coverage of a wide range of events – whilst still maintaining a focus on football that you would expect given the company’s origins – Vernons offer enough choice for even punters with the widest range of gambling requirements.

All in all Vernons score highly and whilst we would expect to see certain improvements now they have been taken over by Netplay, they are still well worth a visit for fans of football and sports betting in general.
